Matsubara Catholic Church
Five people from Matsubara Catholic Church in Tokyo came to Caritas
Minamisoma on a one-day trip. Although the time was limited, Bishop Koda guided
them to see the current situation of Minamisoma.
They were able to
have a look at the current situation in various ways. They visited the TEPCO's
decommissioning museum, stopped at a roadside station in Namie, and then
followed Route 6 to Odaka. They also stopped at 'Oretachi no Denshokan'
(Folklore Museum) and met Ms. Hiroko Hirohata at the Odaka Kobo, where they
were able to listen to the story of her experience at the time of the disaster.
Caritas Restaurant
This was the first trial of "Caritas Shokudo" for Caritas
Minamisoma. To begin with, we planned to serve mainly single parent families
from Sayuri Kindergarten. The main chef was Bishop Koda, who cooked chicken
curry, salad and ice cream for dessert. We also prepared barley tea. On the way
home, the guests were welcomed to take brown rice porridge and vegetable curry
that had been donated by the Madeleine Sophie Centre of the University of the
Sacred Heart. We prepared rice with curry for 50 people. Actually 17 people
from seven families came and enjoyed the meal.
From 1:30 pm, everyone at Caritas Minamisoma worked hard to prepare the
place, dishes, vegetables and meat, etc.,
….. The children were
kindergarteners, so it was quite lively.
On June 28th, Bishop Koda, staff from Caritas Minamisoma and the Sisters of Mary Auxiliatrice of Odaka went to the Zero Yen Restaurant in Odaka. We celebrated the first anniversary of the opening of the cafeteria and observed what they were doing in order to help starting the Caritas Cafeteria.
Caritas Ikoi Cafe
This year, twice a
month, from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm, the 'Relaxing Cafe' gatherings started at
Caritas Minamisoma. This time, we each made our own fan. The teacher was Ms.
Kazue Kobayashi of Haramachi Catholic Church.
We pasted ink painting sketches on fans and coloured them with a special
kind of paint. Beautiful fans were made. After making the fans, we enjoyed
chatting over a cup of tea.
Oretachi no Denshokan: Ms. Hiroko Amano Embroidered Picture Exhibition
We saw an exhibition
of embroidered pictures by Ms. Hiroko Amano at the Oretachi no Densho Kan
(Folklore Museum) in Odaka. The embroidered pictures express various thoughts
and feelings from the nuclear power plant accident in 2011 to the present. The
embroidered waka and haiku poems were also beautifully done.
Volunteer work by high school students
During the summer
holidays, students from some of the high schools that often come to Caritas
Minamisoma came to us again this year.
They were high
school students from Tosei Gakuen in Kiyose, Tokyo, Sendai Ursula Gakuen and
Kyoto Gyosei Gakuen. In the hot weather, we were worried that they might suffer
from heat stroke. The volunteer activities were mainly weeding in several
places.
