Cello Concert at Haramachi Catholic Church
We had a cello concert by Mr. Eijun Tsuchida. He had been chief cellist for the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, Sapporo Symphony Orchestra and others. He played three Ave Marias by Schubert, Caccini, and Gounod, Meditation from Thaïs, etc.
What was very moving was the cello itself. The owner of the cello was an 78 year old lady, who was swept away by the Tsunami in March 2011. He found the cello in her room, badly damaged. The family handed it over to Mr. Tsuchida, who took it back to his hometown Sapporo, and repaired it completely. It sounded beautiful!  He has been around all Japan and he played for 480 concerts.

A chat with a local lady

As I go back and forth between Haramachi and Tokyo by JR Joban line, one of our local friends asked me what I usually do on the train. "While I can see rice fields, mountains, and the sea, it is too good to sleep. Coming closer to Tokyo, what I can see is only tall buildings, no green trees, no mountains, so I sleep." "Ah, Sister, you are really a city person. I'm sick and tired of seeing those things. When I see tall buildings and apartment houses, I'm just amazed and wide awake. I enjoy thinking about what kind of people live there and what are they doing in those buildings."
